As an international organization from the League of Arab States, ACSAD, whose headquarter and main research centre is in Damascus, Syria, plays a major role in the whole Arabic region capacity building and dissemination of results.

ACSAD aims to provide scientific data and modern techniques so as to help in the large scale implementation of the tasks of the agricultural and social development, the rational use of natural resources in the arid and semi arid areas and the realization of the objectives of the Arab Water Security in the Arab world. ACSAD conducts mainly research to develop new insights and approaches to realize sustainable agriculture in arid and semi arid areas of the Arab countries.

The Division of Water Resources places considerable emphasis on water issues, its availability and deficits, human impacts on water resources and optimisation of water management in water scarcity situations. It contributed to the preparation of international guides for hydrological maps of groundwater vulnerability and water resources assessment. The division is promoting integrated management of water basins and efficient use of available water resources.
