Faculty of Sciences Semlalia (FSS)

Created in 1978, the Moroccan FSS has a special place by its integration in international cooperation programs : over 60 international cooperation agreements have been signed. It is also one of the biggest higher education institute in Northern Africa with over 3500 students and 500 teachers and researchers.

The faculty is particularly involved in researches on water management with the departments of fluid mechanic and energetic, new technologies of investigation and management of natural resources, and analysis and control of hydric and bio-environmental systems. The present research subjects are tree plantations, development of arid areas, renewable energies, waste water treatments, environmental protection.

Most of the applications concerns agriculture, and many collaborations exist with the regional administrations in charge of the agriculture and environment management who are interested in measurements of the efficiency of irrigation systems or in the evolution of the groundwater reserves.

The FSS is also interested in new technologies and their applications on water management: the physics department carry out studies on temperature of maize ear temperature and use micro-meteorology. There is a unit of remote sensing and spatial analysis and has recently organized a Symposium on remote sensing in semi-arid and arid environments. One of the ongoing researches concerns the estimation of the groundwater uptakes in the Haouz plain using satellite images and geographic information system.
