This general image of the region is a mosaic of Landsat TM scenes where vegetation appears in green, snow and salt playas in cyan (blue-green), and rocks and bare soil in various other colors. Particularly in the southern part, the volcanic lava flows appear as very dark patches.

On this close-up the oasis of Palmyra appears in dark green and the cultivated fields in the depressions in green. The salt playa (sebkha) appears in blue and cyan.

The experimental station of ACSAD-IRD project is located in the middle of the oasis.
