From simple models it is possible to estimate the total amount of water used by a culture (represented here by a plant) according to the quantity of leaf it has (surface foliaire, LAI) and the irrigation scheme.

Note how this affects the amount of water evaporated by the soil ('lost')
compared to the one transpired by the plant (used for the growth).
